I’ve always been driven.
Sometimes productively. Sometimes obsessively. Sometimes directly into a wall because slowing down, reconsidering, or exercising anything resembling patience were never particular strengths of mine. Then Parkinson’s interrupted the drive.
Drive Interrupted is about what happens after that.
It’s for people living with Parkinson’s, the people living alongside them, and anyone trying to figure out how to keep moving forward when life abruptly changes the route without asking where you were headed.
This isn’t a medical blog. I’m not a doctor, neurologist, therapist, or particularly responsible source of medical advice. I’m a product guy, tinkerer, golfer, husband, father, and guy with Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease who spent most of his life building things, solving problems, moving fast, and possessing approximately zero natural patience. Parkinson’s has been working its magic on that last one.
The blog revolves around three things:
LIVING
The unvarnished reality of life with Parkinson’s. The good days, bad days, relationships, routines, work, exercise, frustration, humor, and all the strange little indignities nobody bothers putting in the YOPD brochure.
LEARNING
The things Parkinson’s has taught me, often without my consent. Patience. Acceptance. Adaptation. Resiliance. Perspective. The importance of good humans. And the surprisingly enormous difference between giving up and simply changing how you do something.
TOOLS
The tools of the PD trade. Apps, products, technology, routines, tricks, and systems that make living with Parkinson’s a little easier. I’m a product guy. If something helps, I want to understand why. If something sucks, I’ll probably have thoughts about that too.
I don’t have Parkinson’s figured out. Nobody does. But after living with it for a while, I’ve learned that an interrupted drive isn’t the same thing as losing your drive.
